Digital Object Identifiers (DOI)

The International DOI Foundation defines DOI as:

“…a system for identifying content objects in the digital environment. DOIs are names assigned to any entity for use on digital networks. They are used to provide current information, including where they (or information about them) can be found on the Internet. Information about a digital object may change over time, including where to find it, but its DOI will not change. Using DOIs as identifiers makes managing intellectual property in a networked environment much easier and more convenient, and allows the construction of automated services and transactions.”

Several million DOIs have already been assigned by DOI agencies, and the system is growing rapidly. The importance of DOI will continue to grow as products become more fragmented and online delivery becomes a more significant part of publishing. VISTA’s transition to accommodating ISBN-13 has provided an opportunity to consider the best approach to additional product identifiers such as DOI.
