Commerce in Digital Content: Trends

Third installment of the Managing and Exploiting Publishing Assets series

November 12, 2007 —The third installment in a three part research series from VISTA, the leading supplier of solutions and services to support the publishing supply chain, is now available. Commerce in Digital Publishing focuses on insight into what publishers are currently doing in this area and how the landscape of digital publishing is evolving. This report also includes a case study exploring HarperCollins and their leading edge approach to leveraging their digital content.

The report – authored by Jim Lichtenberg, President of Lightspeed, LLC, a management consulting practice that focuses on the transformation of publishing due to the impact of new information technologies – points to the challenges and business implications surrounding digital content programs and speaks to the uneasiness of many publishing executives concerning digital publishing. “…since the sale of digital content is not new, why does it feel that way even to the publishers with a number of years of experience? The simplest answer is ‘uncertainty.’” The sources and nature of that uncertainty are examined in this white paper. Topics include:

  • search and its impact on business models;
  • digital publishing in the Higher Ed, STM, and Trade markets; and
  • factors driving digital content.

Through this research, it is apparent that the publishers who will have success with digital products will be those who change their business model and truly become a digital company. HarperCollins is a prime example of one such publisher on their way to success.

The case study follows the evolution of HarperCollins digital content strategy from the development of a digital warehouse to changes in workflow and digital text management in order support full functioning digital commerce. Once a digital file is created for a title, HarperCollins can now feed content and search engines at no incremental cost.

The other reports available from this series, Trends in Digital Asset Management and Trends in Print on Demand, can be requested at the Research page.
